The creation of a company as a complete work of art forms the basis of the legend surrounding Bugatti – both past and present. How is it possible to have made such a lasting impression? How has the marque retained the prestige of its name over the decades, and why does it still have such an impressive resonance? What makes Bugatti so different?
When you first look at today’s Grand Sport roadster, a number of Bugattis of yesteryear spring to mind. It was in 1927 that the first open-top bodies were built for sports cars and super sports cars, along the lines of grand prix cars. Both Ettore and Jean Bugatti were responsible for the design and their plans were turned into reality by Joseph Walter, a recent addition to the Bugatti team at that time. These extremely sporty bodies with their pointed rear-ends and minimal luggage space were labelled “Grand Sport”. In most cases, they only had one door on the driver’s side so as to increase rigidity. Nowadays, the Type 43 Grand Sport with its supercharged eight-cylinder engine is one of the most cherished Bugatti sports cars.

It is extraordinarily difficult to fit the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport into a conventional category. It is not a typical Italian, English, French or German sports car. Rather, it is the coherence of its design that gives the Grand Sport its unique nature, firmly placing the car far beyond the realm of the ordinary. It naturally shows its muscle, power and selfassurance, but, at the same time, conveys charisma, sophistication and poise. In other words, it is a true Bugatti.
